My learning journey in the art of play

vanyāda, resounds "vanya", forest, nature, and "nāda", sound, flow, feeling... an inner state of natural flow

Sound weaving is intuitive as well as art and skill for me. Developing my “playing skills” feels like a passionate spiritual commitment, a journeying lifestyle…

Enchanted

Music has sounded in me since my grandpa enchanted me with his sax and his operettas. Sadly, as a youngster I walked away from his offer to learn the blockflute…

Then drums called me, long, long time. Today I understand his blessing, and I am in love with the fire of flutes: raw, ethnic, alive.

Jazzy Journey

In my ceremonies, the Muraliflute sings, and my gongs answer to its voice. You enter a sound space woven from the voices of gongs and ethnic flutes, Indian Bansuri and Native American woods.

Bansuri’s smooth flow first touched me through Chris Hinze, in his tribute to Incredible India. I had to play it myself. Juan Tepui made me one in Goa. It didn’t work. I wasn’t ready yet.

The Calling
Drums called first, to ceremonial Afro-Brazilian conga roots with mestre sambista Dudu Tucci da Silva, and ten years in samba streetbands. At a campfire, jembefola Sidiki Camara sang a griot story, I colored it on djembe with just my fingertips… he called it ‘vraiment merveilleux’, from his heart. Defzen Murat Coskun took my fingerwork further, into oriental frame drums, and percussionist Johan Latupeirissa lifted my improvising. Without knowing it, I was grounding myself for the flute. Dudu sensed it… at the end of his teachings, looking at me, he simply said: “Flöte ist auch schön…”.

No Shortcuts
His words stayed with me. I wanted the deepest bass flute right away. It doesn’t work like that. The Bansuri asked for my whole body and mind, no shortcuts. Struggle. The Siotanka showed me the way in, with Raffaello training my breath. Juan Tepui brought me into the essence of meditative fluting, keynote by keynote, simplicity, accessible, patient, ‘paz y sciencia’.

The Alchemic Secret
Carla, my Brazilian muse and opera singer of the Zauberflöte, initiated me in the alchemic secret of telling my story through the flute, and comforted my grief of leaving samba behind. When she came to meet my gongs for the first time, she said, inspired: ‘In this field, I can’t chase and catch you and that’s a rare gift’. Magically, now I build the Murali myself, its voice calling my gongs to answer. In this alchemy, a fire stirs inside me, freeing my own voice, finding where it lives in me, letting it flow into the field. From playing instruments to becoming one myself.

Natural Flow
Yoga was the catalyst that reset me, into the fabric of resonance. Don Conreaux, an elder in the Kundalini lineage, opened the way of the gong for me. These threads fall into what he calls “spiritual free jazz,” bridging yogic meditation and soundwork.

Music is my symbol for the Flow of Life… groovin’, knowing when to drop off, improvising through intuitive awakening, then pulling up again to the cadence that carries everything forward.

For sure, be it drums, gongs, or flutes, I’ll flavor it with some Ginga do Samba
